Two is the bestest number
11 October 2020 : 2 years 2 months
Terrible twos, talktative, troublesome, touching, twisted, tremendously adorable twos. “Two years old is the best age. Cherish it,” my girlfriend says, mum of a 6 year old. “Looking back they are definitely the cutest at 2.”
When I’m experiencing something wonderful and I don’t want it to end, I think about the next time it’ll happen. When amazing things happened with my first baby, I thought, I will do this again with a second and third child. And this made me less anxious that the moment of happiness will disappear. A bit silly, really.
I thought having a second child would let me relive the greatest bits of baby-motherhood. At the same time, I expect Jono to sweep through all the difficult parts. I imagine that people who have 3 or more children are also trying to stretch out the magical “age 2” period.
Turns out that it doesn’t work like that. It’s like first love: you can fall in love again and again, but you can’t fall in love for the first time again.
Every day Lochie surprises us with new words, phrases, skills, mispronunciations, ideas, behaviours. Let’s take stock of the funniest things he does to date.
- Massage
When I change his nappy, he says, “massage?” I massage his legs and hands as often as he’ll let me (or as Jono lets me, since Jono still takes up most of my time.) I hope that this sensory expansion of his world, with all the endorphins that massages release, will help him in so many ways. I wonder how many mothers dare to be physically loving with their toddler sons? Intimacy and touch is so important to our wellbeing. Unconditional love, physical touch, confidence, support. - Fok it
Lochie has a new favourite type of “things that go”. “Fok it,” he announced excitedly after childcare one day. What, Lochie? “Fok it!” Oh, you mean this thing, this fork lift? “Yessh…” We asked him to repeat this, about 40 times. I’m ashamed. - Tenteen
Lochie, can you count to 20? “Sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, tenteen!” Can’t fault the logic. - Ohbigod
Lochie also discovered that OMG is addictive. He has particularly enjoyed experimenting with various intonations of his new favourite phrase. “Ohbigod? Oh… ohbeegod!” - Pie apple
And why shouldn’t it be called that? Strawberry is dobi, Whiskey is wiki, watermelon is otalemon.
